Hucknall Rolls Leisure 4-1 Awsworth Villa

Venue: Hucknall Rolls Royce, Watnall Road, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire

Competition: Notts Senior League - Senior Division

Bonus Friday night game - nice and local too.  A decent crowd was treated to four star(t) entertainment as Rolls consolidated their position at the top of the division.

Stood with our good friends Richard " Wanderer" Lane, "Bury" Paul, Mr. Mac and "Deadly" Derek Coope -  Derek is not too happy with the nickname, so apologies are in order and it will not be used on here again.

The ground staff at Rolls have worked wonders to ensure the playing surface is in good shape, and the flat surface certainly made for a very acceptable game of football.

It was Awsworth who applied the early pressure, and they tested home keeper Jake Pearson once or twice early doors.

ANDY START grabbed the first of his four goals in the 14th minute.  Awsworth attacked down their right, but when trying to recycle the ball down the right, a defender allowed it to pass him by and Start nipped in to claim possession. The striker ran unchallenged into the area before slotting past the visiting keeper.

6 minutes later, it was all square. The visiting no.7 was pipped to the ball by Rolls' defender Ashley Marshall after it was played in from the left. Unfortunately for the defender he managed only to divert the ball past keeper Pearson.

The parity lasted just 5 minutes though, START on the mark again, this time racing in from the right before firing across the keeper and sending the ball flying in at the far post. H-T 2-1

START completed his treble on 51 with a goal out of the top drawer. Pacey winger Kane Matthews whipped in a wonderful cross from the left, and Start unleashed a fantastic volley from just inside the box that absolutely flew into the net, leaving the keeper grasping at thin air, and some of us gasping for breath. What a goal, and what a way to complete a hat-trick!

The fourth Rolls goal came in a more direct fashion. A long clearance by Pearson skidded off the bald pate of the Awsworth no. 4 and landed straight into the path of START. The hit-man pushed his strike partner out of the way to get to the ball, and composed himself superbly before smashing home from 16 yards. F-T 4-1

Referee Steve Sears had a good game - there were some strange and wonderful tackles as the game wore on, but Mr. Sears let the game flow and fully played his part in what turned out to be very entertaining game.

Kirkby Town 3-1 Robin Hood FC

Venue: The Summit Centre, Kirkby-In-Ashfield, Notts.

Competition: Notts Sunday League Premier One.

Scorers:
Kirkby Town - Kristian Watson (20, 32) Nathan Watson (51)
Robin Hood - Danny Bingham (70)

Had to go to this game to catch up with Brian Dennett and hand over the £12 sponsorship money we had pledged - the Carlton Town Pool Marathon was completed last week - well done to everyone involved.

Kirkby supremo Andy Cruddace had prepared the pitch, and it has to be said that after the recent spell of crappy weather, the playing surface was superb.

Kirkby have now played 7 league games, winning them all and scoring 48 goals along the way, conceding just 12.

We had to wait until the 20th minute for the first goal, and inevitably it was one of the trio of Watson brothers who was on the mark. A neat through ball picked out KRISTIAN WATSON who controlled calmly before drilling the ball past the visiting keeper.

12 minutes later, it was KRISTIAN again who doubled the home teams lead, this time a simple tap in in front of goal after he was fed by brother Keiran. H-T 2-0

With just 6 minutes of the second half played, NATHAN WATSON increased Kirkby's lead even further, clipping home Kieran's cross.

The visitors never let their heads drop, and with the ever increasing wind behind their backs, began to take the ball to their opponents.

Robin Hood's attacking play was rewarded on 70 when DANNY BINGHAM  raced in and smashed the ball past Kirkby keeper Jason Fisher.

The home team managed to restrict the damage to just the one goal though and kept up their unbeaten league run. F-T 3-1

Heanor Town 4-3 Long Eaton Utd

Venue: The Town Ground, Heanor, Derbyshire.

Scorers:
Town - Crosby (55, 69, 73), Moran (85)
United - Armstrong (10), Grantham(12, 25)

As with most teams, Heanor's league programme has been badly affected by the recent weather, so I waited until this game was declared to be officially on before changing from our planned trip to see Basford take on Maltby Main.

Not a bad decision as it happens! Basford went down 5-0 and the Lions came back from a 3-0 deficit at the break to grab all three points.

Heanor General Manager Scott Ward had lamented as to how bad his morning had been for one reason or another, and after 25 minutes of this game he must have been pulling his hair out!!!

Before the game, home keeper Mark Frost was presented with an award for reaching a century of games. There was also a very well  observed minutes silence in memory of Heanor Town legend Aubrey Ratcliffe before kick off.

United were sporting a startling lime green outfit, and looked to have quite a few players in their line-up over the 6ft mark. This was probably a disadvantage as the game wore on. They may have been three goals to the good after 25 minutes, but they had to work really hard to compensate for going down to 10 men, and as their stamina faded, the home team took full advantage.

United went ahead on 10, MICHAEL ARMSTRONG firing in a free-kick from the left that by-passed everyone in the area and nestled in the back of the town net.

0-1

COUREY GRANTHAM had scored 15 goals in 20 appearances for Heanor earlier in the season, but after his loan spell at the Town Ground was over, his parent club Ilkeston FC sent him out to Long Eaton. You just knew the talented player would make an impact against his former team, and he duly oblidged, firing past Frost from the edge of the box in the 12th minute to extend the visitors' lead.

0-2

When the ball was played into Nathan Benger's path on 15, United keeper Cameron Mason raced out of his box and clattered into the Lions' striker, preventing an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and giving Referee Lisa Rashid little alternative other than to dismiss the young custodian.

Going down to 10 men didn't affect United at first, and GRANTHAM added their third on 25, stepping around Chris Shaw before curling his shot past Frost. Keiran Debrouwer had a great chance to reduce the home team arrears in the 39th minute, but after running in on goal and making space for the shot, he watched in agony as the ball flew just wide of the upright. H-T 0-3

0-3

Heanor Manager Glen clarence made two changes at the break, and they proved to be master strokes! Ryan Tinsley was replaced in midfield by Gerry Moran, and debutant Luke Crosby came on for Josh Raven, the big striker adding more firepower to the already potent looking attack force of Benger and Debrouwer.

It didn't take long for CROSBY to make his mark on the game. After collecting a neat ball in from Gary Webster, the striker turned well inside the box before drilling the ball past United's stand-in keeper.

1-3

Heanor were buoyed by this goal and piled on the pressure. It wasn't until the 69th minute though before the stubborn Long Eaton back line was breached again. CROSBY found space on the edge of the box, tried his luck, and was rewarded when his shot flew past the keeper's despairing dive.

2-3

CROSBY completed his debut treble on 73, racing in from the right and curling a spectacular left foot effort into the far top corner.

3-3

So, three all with 15 to go - could Heanor do it? Yes they could. As predicted the United players were struggling by now, and on 85  a cross from the left bounced over the advancing keeper. The ball landed neatly on the head of GERRY MORAN - the smallest player on the pitch gleefully steering the ball home from 12 yards to give the lions and unlikely victory. F-T 4-3

4-3

It was good to see a fair smattering of Eastwood Town supporters present - and well done to Heanor for allowing the Badgers' season ticket holders to use their tickets at the Town Ground.

Both Kev and I thought that Referee Lisa Rashid had had a decent game, but this thought was not shared by some of the home fans. She appeared to have called most of the important decisions correclty, and although she failed to allow advantage on a couple of occasions, we reckoned that the game was handled very competently.

Forest Ladies 0-5 Arsenal Ladies

Venue: Hucknall Rolls Leisure, Watnall Road, Hucknall, Notts.

Scorers: Jordan Nobbs (pen 19), 85, Caroline Weir (32, 36), Bianca Bragg (87)

The first thing to say is well done to the ground staff at Hucknall Rolls - splendid effort to get the pitch back to something like normal after the weekend games had left it like a ploughed field.

This was a friendly game between Forest Ladies and Arsenal Ladies - but it was like a carnival ! Several hundred people turned out to see the the home team take on one of the country's best teams, and even though the Reds were outclassed throughout, it seemed everyone had a good time. The barbecue appeared to be doing a roaring trade, and the bar was rammed!

It was strange to see so many at a Forest game - on Sunday, only 46 were on hand to see the F.A. Cup game against Gillingham Ladies.

Arsenal went ahead on 19, a penalty converted by JORDAN NOBBS after a defender was adjudged to have handled in the area.

The second goal came in the 32nd minute and it was a real belter, CAROLINE WEIR drilling home superbly from 6 yards after she connected perfectly with a cross in from the right. WEIR was on target again just four minutes later, side-footing home from close range. H-T 0-3

Forest made more of a game of it after the break, and were unlucky when Amber Hughes had an effort well saved by the Gunners' keeper.  The loose ball was smashed goalwards by Kirsty Allen but she could only look on in disbelief  as the ball crashed off the bar and flew safe.

JORDAN NOBBS hit the fourth Arsenal goal with 5 to play, her 25 yard screamer giving Forest's substitute keeper Georgina Merritt keeper no chance.

Nobbs looked the best player on the pitch throughout, what a classy midfielder this young lady is.

Arsenal added their fifth on 87, BIANCA BRAGG dancing her way into the six-yard box before slotting neatly home to round off a fine display by the Arsenal Ladies team. F-T 0-5

Nottingham Forest Ladies 0-1 Gillingham Ladies

Venue: Hucknall Rolls Leisure, Watnall road, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.

Womens F.A. Cup 3rd Round,

Kick off - 2:08pm.

Scorer: Charlotte Gurr (pen 18)

Line-ups:
Forest: Kinnerley, McKechnie, Greenan, Griffin, Kennaugh, Hollingsworth, Bell, Thomas, Howard, Greaves, Hughes. Subs: Allen, Merritt, Meade, Sullivan, Grimadell.

Gills: Baker, Davis, Carlton, Blackie (c), Ahern, D.Cooper, Tune, C.Long, Gibbons, Gurr, Whinnett.  Subs: E.Wood, L.Fulgence, J.Keogh, L.Williams, L.Phillips, C.Cooper, C.Shanley.

Met up with Richard "Wanderer" Lane and "Deadly" Derek  inside the ground - and we all expressed our surprise that there was no gate.  So, we had a couple of hours entertainment for just the cost of a programme - bargain!

As we walked to the pitch, it was evident that it wasn't in the best of conditions - mud bath in the goal areas and it was impossible to make out the centre circle.

The pitch was heavy to say the least, but the girls made light work of it did well to give us such a good game

I've watched Forest Ladies a couple of times this season, and they impressed on both occasions. Not this time unfortunately - their opponents were far too strong and bossed just about every area of the pitch.  Danielle Carlton was superb in the Gills' defence and was my choice for MOM.

Both teams have very similar records in their respective WPL divisions, and there was not a lot of chance of a goalfest.

Forest: Womens Premier League Northern Div
P9 W6 D2 L1 F24 A9 Pts 20

Gills: Womens Premier League Southern Div
P11 W8 D2 L1 F32 A7 Pts 26

It looked on paper as though one goal might settle this tie, and it did. After Forest had pressured the Gills defence early doors, after 18 minutes a neat attacking move by the visitors culminated with centre-forward Fliss Gibbons being upended by Reds keeper Vanessa Kinnerley.  The Referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and to be fair, there were no protests from any of the home players.

Up stepped CHARLOTTE GURR to take the kick and the no. 10 gave Kinnerley no chance from 12 yards.

Forest tried their hardest to get back into the game, but the Gills back-line was solid and keeper Faye Baker was hardly troubled at all. F-T 0-1

The reward for the Gills is visit from either Preston NE or Yeovil.

Hucknall Town 0-1 Bulwell FC

Venue: Watnall Road, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.

After another Saturday morning watching fixtures fall by the wayside, we only had a couple of options available to us, Hucknall Rolls v Keyworth Utd or Hucknall Town v Bulwell FC.  Hucknall Rolls has very limited cover and as it rained heavily on and off throughout the game, our choice of Hucknall Town proved to be the correct one.

Kev was able to make this game, nice to have the daftlad back.  The first person we met inside the ground was Scunthorpe Utd's Terry Hawkridge. The Iron played at Accrington on Friday night, giving Terry a chance to catch up with his former team-mates in the Bulwell side.

This should have been an away banker, but even though the Bulls did eventually leave Watnall Road with all three points, they could easily have lost this 5 or 6-1. Hucknall were, to be quite frank, appalling in front of goal, missing chance after chance.

Good to see Elliott Jones starting for the Yellows at left back - the former Pinxton player slotted in well alongside Josh Henry, Adam Whitehead and Montel Gatland in the Town back-line.

Bulwell seemed a little surprised by how their opposition started the game, and a few of their strong challenges gave Referee Martyn Fryer cause to caution two players before the break. H-T 0-0

I have seen RYAN BOWEN play Sunday football with Kirkby Town, and he is undoubtedly a talented player.  His goal after 51 minutes settled this game, a crisp side-effort effort from the edge of the box after Jamie Walker picked him out with a neat ball in from the left.

We were treated to a spell of torrential rain that made the middle of the pitch a veritable  mudbath, but even after the Bulls were reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of Conor Carter for foul and abusive language on 61, Hucknall failed to take advantage of their numerous decent chances and the win saw Bulwell increase their lead at the top of the CML South division to 7 points. Rainworth MW 0-1 Coalville Town

Venue: Kirklington Road, Rainworth, Nottinghamshire.

Scorer: Ben Saunders (78)

On my own again for this one - Kev is still taking care of Mrs "Daftlad" who is still convalescing after her recent surgery. I didn't pick up a team sheet - I think there were some available, but I couldn't be bothered to ask.

Not much to write about - both teams struggled with the fierce, driving wind. Town kicked with the wind in the first period, and tried long range shooting after failing to break down a stubborn Wrens defence early doors.

James Martin in the home goal handled any shots that were on target, but most of the efforts flew way over the Rainworth goal.

The only goal of the game came with 12 to play. After a Wrens'  attacking move broke down, Jordan Nadat found time and space on the right, and made a defence splitting pass straight into the path of Town striker BEN SAUNDERS, and the former Gedling Town player ran on and curled the ball low around Martin from just inside the penalty area. F-T 0-1

Referee Mr. David Sullivan - largely untroubled throughout the game. It was difficult at times to pick him out as he wore his standard all black combo, whilst Coalville were wearing black and white striped shirts (with all black backs), black shorts and socks. I'd have thought a change of colour would have been in order for the officials.

Hucknall Town 0-2 Southwell City

Venue : Watnall Road, Hucknall, Notts.

With Kev taking care of family business, I was debating on whether to stick to my original game at Clipstone, or stay uber-local and take in Hucknall Town v Southwell City. As the weather forecast was specific about rain at 5pm, I opted for the latter choice, and as I drove into the car-park, was pleased to see "Mr. Newark Town", Richard Lane, walking towards the turnstile - this meant at least I wouldn't be "Billy No-Mates" again!!

The team sheet was stuck in a window in the club shop - securely behind bars so no-one could have it away....made it a bitch to photograph!!!

I did write the line-ups down though -

Town: Beddingham, Gatland, Crisp, Arnold, Davidson, Henry, Whetton, Aikman, Hamilton, Francis, Whitehead. Subs: Gillott, Oyesile, Lomax, Mugadza, Ford

City: Danby, Chatfield, Nadif, Smith, Gill, Guest, Walker, Brown,  Waites, Whitely, Webster. Subs: Royes, Ratcliffe, Cowley, MacDonald.

STEF WHITELY opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, prodding home from two yards after the Hucknall defence failed to clear a corner, and failed in their efforts to stop the Southwell striker getting to the loose ball first. H-T 0-1

Southwell wrapped up the points in the 93rd minute. When Town were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the City penalty area, they sent everyone up, except keeper James Beddingham. John Whetton tried to be cute and roll the ball under the defensive wall, but unfortunately for Whetton, the wall didn't jump and the ball was played quickly out of defence to STEF WHITELY who was on his own on the half way line. The no. 10 had no trouble in getting the ball under control, and ran with it into the Town box before firing an unstoppable shot past Beddingham. F-T 0-2

This result was a bit harsh on the home team who, it can be argued, deserved at least a share of the spoils. Really poor play in front of goal robbed the Yellows of a point, one effort from 6 yards flying so high over the City bar that NASA are busy tracking it as we speak...

Referee Scott Mason had a quiet game - he only had to caution two  players during the game, both from Southwell.

Good to see our friends Robin and Declan Bourne at the game. I don't think I've ever previously seen these excellent match officials together as mere spectators....funny man is Robin, very funny!!

Foot-note: the rain actually began at 17:05 - and as I had planned, I was back home by then!
