Notts Sunday Premier Premier Division: ko 10:33am
Wasn't really bothered about going to a game, but thought it was time to check out the Fly's at their new home. The home team were bottom of the league before ko, with their opponents next to bottom, so a game full of talent and skill was never on the cards.
The first half had me wishing I'd have stayed at home, it was that lacking in anything. Trowsers were awarded a penalty on 14, but Jody Hughes fired his tame spot kick hopelessly wide of the post. Not seen such a poor penalty kick for ages!!!
Despite being under constant pressure from the visiting team, it was the homesters who drew first blood in the 28th minute, BEN SAMUELS dancing through the Trowsers defence before drilling a low drive past the keeper from the edge of the box.
Ben Samuels (10) and Jonathon Sherriff
Charlie Miller (8) and Sherriff (3)
Jody Hughes (11) Chris Swain (17) Sherriff
Ben Samuels
The lead lasted barely 10 minutes though as a wayward Fly's defence allowed former Basford United man TOMMY KEMP to waltz unchallenged into the box and fire a sweet shot across the home keeper and into the corner of the net. H-T 1-1
HUGHES made amends for his penalty aberration with 13 of the second half played, firing across the home keeper and into the far corner after he was picked out by a raking through ball from midfield.
CHARLIE MILLER saw his free-kick on 75 fly in at the far stick to bring Barfly's level, although the defender on the line did his best to keep out the set-piece.
JONATHON SHERRIFF will admit he doesn't possess the most athletic of figures, but he coped well at left back, and when he when he went up top as the game wore on, he grabbed the Flys' winning goal with 7 minutes to play.
To be fair the goal was a gift - the visiting keeper coming out to clear, managed only to give the ball to the no. 3 some 25 yards from goal, and with the empty net gaping the big man took aim and steered the ball home. F-T 3-2
The victory celebrations after the final whistle were understandable as this was the home teams first win of the season. Although a draw would probably have been a fair result, Barfly's have to take a lot of plaudits for their fighting performance and never say die attitude.
Attendance: H/C 21.
