Selston FC 3-0 Sandhurst FC

Venue: The Parish, Mansfield Road, Selston, ko 2:00pm

I've been to the Parish once before, when my lad played for Spot On against Selston White Lion. That was a long while ago, but made memorable as Chris grabbed a goal in the 2-1 win.

It was great to have Kev with me again - he's having a bit of tough time at the moment with one thing and another.

We have been hearing good things about Selston FC recently, so thought it was time to check for ourselves.

After watching the pre-match warm up, we were greeted by our good friend Jamie Renshaw - just one of the former Pinxton players on view.

Selston line-up:
Jake Simpson, James Barry, Jamie Renshaw, Perry Marriott, Shaun Farnsworth, Elliott Jones, Ben Moore, Dominic Airey, Richard Jeffrey, Jake Wright, Rory Davis.

There was a major distraction pitch-side....she certainly made the visit to Selston worthwhile!!

On paper this was a home banker, as league positions show. However, the visitors had a right go at their high flying hosts straight from the off.

A 5th minute Sandhurst corner was punched onto the bar by Jake Simpson, and the loose ball hacked off the goal line as Selston struggled to cope with the travellers' early pressure.

Sandhurst no. 10 Ryan Martin was released by a great through ball from midfield, but when one-on-one with Simpson, he tamely lifted the ball high over the bar when he really should have scored.

Jake Wright saw his hammer of a shot fizz just past the post on 20, then when he found space to run into the box, it took a great tackle to foil the Selston no. 10.

Rich Jeffrey saw his 37th minute free-kick fly just over the bar as the home team began to dictate the play. Selston took the lead right on the stroke of half-time, JAKE WRIGHT blasting home the loose ball after Perry Marriott's header from a Rory Davis corner had been cleared off the line. H-T 1-0

Marriott's header blocked

Selston began the second half with a little more passion and intent than they had shown in the first, and within two minutes of the restart, Wright went close with a low drive from the edge of the box.

On 56, a cracking Jimmy Barry tackle set Ben Moore free and he danced past his marker before picking out the run of JAKE WRIGHT. The striker managed to get a toe to the pass before the covering defender, leaving the visiting keeper watching in anguish as the ball crept just inside the post.

On the hour mark, Moore saw his volley from the corner of the box crash against the foot of the post as the home team piled on the pressure.

Sandhurst's Adam Towlson and Selston's Ben Moore

Moore was also involved in the third Selston goal after 72 minutes, playing in RICH JEFFREY. The keeper will have to take full responsibility though for allowing the strikers speculative 20 yard effort slip under his body. F-T 3-0

Oh no..look at the no. 2's face!!

Referee Dave Hale had a bit of a 'mare, but he probably wasn't helped by a crunching tackle on him halfway through the first period!! He was always a few yards behind the play and failed to give the players any confidence in his decision making.

The only thing that you could be sure of was that he expected every free-kick to be taken from the "exact blade of grass". This is so annoying to players, managers and spectators alike - moving the ball a few inches is not really necessary Ref!

Barfly's H2O 3-2 Trowsers

Venue: Hucknall Town FC, Watnall Road, Hucknall.

Notts Sunday Premier Premier Division: ko 10:33am

Wasn't really bothered about going to a game, but thought it was time to check out the Fly's at their new home. The home team were bottom of the league before ko, with their opponents next to bottom, so a game full of talent and skill was never on the cards.

The first half had me wishing I'd have stayed at home, it was that lacking in anything.  Trowsers were awarded a penalty on 14, but Jody Hughes fired his tame spot kick hopelessly wide of the post. Not seen such a poor penalty kick for ages!!!

Despite being under constant pressure from the visiting team, it was the homesters who drew first blood in the 28th minute,  BEN SAMUELS dancing through the Trowsers defence before drilling a low drive past the keeper from the edge of the box.

Ben Samuels (10) and Jonathon Sherriff

Charlie Miller (8) and Sherriff (3)

Jody Hughes (11) Chris Swain (17) Sherriff

Ben Samuels

The lead lasted barely 10 minutes though as a wayward Fly's defence allowed former Basford United man TOMMY KEMP to waltz unchallenged into the box and fire a sweet shot across the home keeper and into the corner of the net. H-T 1-1

HUGHES made amends for his penalty aberration with 13 of the second half played, firing across the home keeper and into the far corner after he was picked out by a raking through ball from midfield.

CHARLIE MILLER saw his free-kick on 75 fly in at the far stick to bring Barfly's level, although the defender on the line did his best to keep out the set-piece.

JONATHON SHERRIFF will admit he doesn't possess the most athletic of figures, but he coped well at left back, and when he when he went up top as the game wore on, he grabbed the Flys' winning goal with 7 minutes to play.

To be fair the goal was a gift -  the visiting keeper coming out to clear,  managed only to give the ball to the no. 3 some 25 yards from goal, and with the empty net gaping the big man took aim and steered the ball home. F-T 3-2

The victory celebrations after the final whistle were understandable as this was the home teams first win of the season. Although a draw would probably have been a fair result,  Barfly's have to take a lot of plaudits for  their  fighting performance and never say die attitude.

Attendance: H/C  21.

Blidworth Welfare 0-4 Southwell City

Venue: The Welfare Ground, Mansfield Road, Blidworth

Apologies for the lack of pics - Kev couldn't make a game this week. I was undecided where to go - until I got a text from my good friend Rob Waite telling me he was visiting Blidworth with his buddy Mick Cooke. Not seen my blogging mentor for ages, his time as Harworth CI Secretary taking up most of his spare time nowadays.

Me and Mick - some sneaky snapper in action!!!

Arrived at the ground ten minutes before the teams took to the pitch - paid my £3 but was informed that there were no programmes left...

Thanks to my Assistant "Statto" for the pic!

A few weeks ago I tweeted my despair at not getting hold of a teamsheet at the Hucknall v Southwell game - I got the scorers wrong, as well as both keepers names.

That wasn't going to happen at this game as Southwell Manager Dave Scott went out of his way to ensure a teamsheet was made available, and introducing me to his Chairman Colin Abbott who had the teamsheet to hand.

Dave and Rob had met previously at a Harworth game after Dave's lost wallet was handed in to Rob - and returned safely to it's owner..

Lyam Webster showed his intent early doors, clipping a neat effort goalwards after 7 minutes play, and only a cracking save by Jason Fisher in the home goal kept the scores level.

WEBSTER scored the first of his personal treble on 25, his fierce drive from 25+ yards beating the despairing dive of Fisher, who despite getting a hand to the shot, couldn't deflect it quite enough and the ball ended up nestling in the back of the net.

City though they had doubled their lead on 35 when Stefen Whitely prodded the ball home from close range after a shot had been blocked. Unfortunately for Whitely though, Referee Mark Curwood had seen him bring the loose ball under control with his hand and quite rightly ruled the effort out.

Fisher made another great save to foil Ant Brown soon after, but with two minutes to go before the break, he was unable to stop MARLON WAITES tapping in Whitely's cross after he was allowed space in front of goal. H-T 0-2

First half action

WEBSTER wasted no time increasing the city lead after the break, another neat clip past Fisher after he was picked out by Whitely.

The Blidworth defence was struggling to deal with former Bilborough Town man Webster, and only a sterling performance by Fisher kept the score down. A save on 37 was a real cracker, diving to his left to tip away Webster's shot that was curling into the top corner.

Fisher was beaten again though on 84, this time WEBSTER firing home from the spot, after Ryan Meehan had tripped a Southwell player just inside the box.

Video is a bit dark, but then again the camera I was using is crap!

Arnold Town 3-1 Anstey Nomads

Venue: Eagle Valley, Oxton Road, Arnold.

Good things happening on the pitch at Arnold - if they can sort out their well documented issues off the pitch, then they may be able to go forward and regain their rightful place as one of Nottinghamshire's top non-league clubs.

The Eagles were top of the EMCL before kick off, whilst their visitors are having a bit of a struggle and were third bottom.

Arnold look to have put together a good squad of players, but seem to be desperately short of a top striker. They actually ended this game with midfielder Matt Peberday up top, after Ben Middleton had failed to make an impression against a very determined Anstey defence.

Eagles: Walker L, Hall, Price, Hayes (c), Hore, Spiers, Slawson, Fatta, Middleton, Corrigan, Royes. Subs: Meakin, Sutton, Peberday, Smith, Walker J.

Nomads: Witham, Goodman, Aikens, Alexander (c), Clayton, Smith, Oliver, Litchfield, Penn, Creese, Beck. Subs: Brett, Darko, Williams, Gibbs.

Danny Hayes had a header cleared off the line in the 10th minute as Arnold pressed in the early stages of the game. The visitors were well disciplined across the back, and managed to repel everything that Arnold threw at them.

The Eagles thought they had taken the lead on 23, but Hayes had strayed off-side before he headed Liam Corrigan's free-kick past Nomad's keeper James Witham.

Hayes' effort ruled out

It took a 30 yard drive in the 27th minute from REGGIE ROYES to breach the stubborn Nomads defence and to be fair, Witham did get a hand to the ball, but couldn't divert it away from goal.

Royes' (out of shot) hits the games first goal

Andreas Fatta tried his luck from 18 yards soon after - on this occasion Witham managed to palm the shot onto the bar before gathering at the second attempt. Fatta then made a mazy run into the Anstey box on 38, but dragged his eventual shot hopelessly wide.

Mitch Slawson fired one in from 25 yards just before the break, but the effort flew just wide of the upright. H-T 1-0

Slawson had the first shot in anger after the restart - on this occasion though, Witham was able to gather safely.

With five minutes of the second half played, Nomads were level - OLIVER CREESE prodding home at the far stick after Eagle's keeper Lance Walker had parried Matt Penn's 18 yard drive.

Arnold were slightly wrong-footed by the goal, and took a while to get back into their rhythm. They have to thank Witham for his help in restoring their lead, the keeper allowing a 63rd minute tame CHRIS HALL effort from the corner of the box to creep under his body.

Anstey looked a spent force and hardly troubled the home defence as the game wore on. In the 65th minute, Peberday had a great chance to make a scoring debut for the Eagles, but Witham foiled the former Linby man, tipping his shot onto the bar after Royes had picked him out in the box.

Jimmy Spiers struck the foot of the post on 88, then Peberday was played in one-on-one with Witham - the keeper doing well to reach up and catch the ball after the sub attempted to lift it over him.

LUKE SMITH added the Arnold third goal from the spot in the third minute of stoppage time, firing comfortably past Witham. F-T 3-1

We hadn't seen Referee Scott Mason in action for a while - he handled this game superbly - although the players were, on the most part, on  their best behaviour!

Green Dragon 2-1 Kirkby Town

Venue: Titchfield Park, Hucknall.

Green Dragon play in the Notts Sunday league Premier Premier Division, but were without a win so far this season.  Kirkby are members of NSL Premier One, and were still unbeaten prior to kick off. Was supposed to have been an away banker, but as we all know, "it's a funny old game"!

The teams entered the pitch a little after the 11am scheduled kick off time, then stood in silence for two minutes in honour of the fallen.

Empire / Farndon Utd pay their respects...

...as do Green Dragon and Kirkby Town

Kev accompanied me for this game, he very rarely does Sunday games. He managed to catch Kirkby at their least effective and after I had been waxing lyrical about the Kirkby team, must have left the game wondering what all the fuss was about.

Looking at the Kirkby line-up, you can perhaps understand why they were favourites to go forward to the next round of the Notts F.A. Sunday Senior Cup :

Steve Boot, Stefan Cobb, Gary Armstrong, Dan Fisher, Dave Voller, Gary Castledine, Kris Watson, Marc Walters, Keiran Watson, Fraser Campbell, Russel Smith. Bench: Tony Law, Ricky Law, Alton Rennals.

Great to see Cas on the Park

Even without regular starters Ryan Bowen, Nathan Watson and Tom Cresswell, the town side should have had enough to see off struggling Dragon.

KIERAN WATSON grabbed the games first goal in the 12th minute, dancing into the box before sending a low shot into the far corner of the goal.

Keiran Watson fires home

The visitors wasted several decent opportunities as the half drew to it's conclusion, but stout defending saw the home team go into the break with just the one goal defecit. H-T 0-1

Kane Matthews in first half action

The scores were level with two minutes of the restart, the Dragon no. 16 (name not known) glancing a header past Boot into the goal at the far stick.  KANE MATTHEWS added the home teams second soon after, racing into the box and firing across Boot.

Town Manager Andy Cruddace rang the changes soon after, replacing Smith with Tony Law and Campbell with brother Ricky. Ricky didn't last long though, he was replaced by Rennals after turning an ankle on the bumpy pitch.

Kirkby threw everything at the home defence as they  tried  desperately  to level the scores, but the players in the green and black stripes were having none of it and held on to their lead until Referee John Dolbear called a final halt to proceedings after 4 minutes of added time had been played. F-T 2-1
